An FTC team at Orlando Science High School
Fractal Fusion is a student run FIRST Tech Challenge team in Orlando, Florida. We design, build, program and drive a robot for a new game every September, and we compete in the Orlando Robotics League.
Our first season was 2024. We were not good at it. We finished seventeenth of twenty eight at the state championship and went home having learned mostly what we did not know.
Our second season we won our league tournament without losing a qualification match, were the first pick of the winning alliance at the Florida Championship, and competed in the Ross Division at the FIRST World Championship.
The gap between those two paragraphs is what this website is about. It is not talent. It is two years of iterations, most of which failed, and the log is where we write them down.
Why Fractal Fusion
A fractal has the same structure at every scale.
That's the half of our name that describes how we improve. A season is a loop of robot iterations, a robot is a loop of subsystem iterations, and a subsystem is a loop of part iterations. Try, observe, change one thing, run it again. The size of the problem changes. The method doesn't.
Fusion is the other half: mechanical, electrical, software, and strategy don't run as separate tracks. They get folded into the same loop, so a change in one shows up in the next iteration of all of them.
